Starting MKVToolNix v11.0 or later on Windows fails with errors about DLLs not being found

The DLLs listed can include e.g. EVR.DLL.

The problem

Starting with v11.0, MKVToolNix uses Qt's multimedia framework which in turn uses the Windows Media Foundation framework on Windows. This has to be installed, otherwise the GUI won't run.

This can affect the following versions:

  • Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
  • N and KN versions of Windows
  • Windows versions before Vista/Windows Server 2012, but those aren't supported by MKVToolNix anyway

The solution

The solution depends on your Windows versions.

Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2

Use the Server Manager to install the feature "Media Foundation".

N and KN versions of Windows

Install the Windows Media Feature Pack for your particular Windows version. This pack should include the Windows Media Framework. Note that I haven't tested this myself as I don't have such a version available.
